The New Anti-Catholicism: The Last Acceptable Prejudice - a book report on systemic hatred
Animal Nepotism
The practice of favoring relatives or friends for jobs or promotions involves several systemic and organizational disadvantages:
Managers may find it hard to be fair when supervising family members. This complicates reviews, discipline, and pay talks because personal feelings get involved.
Close personal relationships often involve a ‘shorthand’ communication style. This can lead to faster decision-making and a more unified vision at the executive level, as goals and perspectives often align.

during shifts. The manager also posted a sexually explicit ‘scoreboard’ tracking staff members' private sex lives in the main office. When the employee complained, coworkers retaliated against him, and he was ultimately forced to resign. Chipotle settled with the EEOC for $95,000 paid directly to him. This is just one example of male sexual harassment cases that seldom make sensational news.
Preface: When I was a boy, my much wiser big brother Enrico informed me that if one wanted an argument, just open a discussion on sex, religion, or politics. So, being comfy up here on the fence, I've enjoyed a bird's eye view of all you silly humans playing the persuasion game badly. Naturally, we expect absolute moralism to create 'us versus them' scenarios for society. After all, two things cannot occupy the same space, or can they? Truth is but one point, right? 'God is real' versus 'God is a concept' is the argument. In this penitential Advent stage of the Christmas season, I intend to provide a book report that includes historical facts regarding the 'thinking man's anti-Semitism,' a phrase coined by Arthur Schlesinger.
Arthur Schlesinger
Schlesinger was born in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Elizabeth Harriet (nee Bancroft) and Arthur M. Schlesinger (!888-1965), an influential historian at Ohio State University. His paternal grandfather was a Prussian Jew who converted to Protestantism and married an Austrian Catholic. According to family tradition, his mother, a Mayflower descendant, was of German and New England ancestry and a relative of historian George Bancroft. Schlesinger practiced Unitarianism.
As a writer, I am confronted with three problems: 1. Everyone reading this has unexamined biases. 2. Embedded biases can color how one perceives stories of religious intolerance. 3. Gross ignorance. I am figuring out how to please everybody who reads this; however, I welcome intelligent argument if you think I'm off. I do not proselytize for any religion but hope every individual will map their path of faith, even if it is a path of no faith. Just identify your spiritual horizon and head for it. Simple.
What I know is all that I know, a finite library of cerebral knowledge. Outside that subjective reality lies a vast universe of ignorance, my reason for open-mindedness and humility. At my core, I'm a perma-skeptic who continually questions everything, especially long-embedded personal 'truths' and hidden biases. Notwithstanding actual apparitions, I tend not to believe abstract concepts unless they are carefully and logically derived through reason and are perceived by my senses.
If I think I hear divine voices speaking to me, am I crazy? Or am I receiving the voice of God speaking to me through the megaphone of conscience, just like Joan d'Arc? I don't know. That's why I explore this subject with you. I'm blessed or cursed with being born with an extreme curiosity about everything and how everything indescribably connects to everything else. Please receive this report for awareness, not necessarily agreement with every point. I could make mistakes, so please don't crucify the piano player.
Aware that this report will be read by everyone, from non-practicing or devout Christians to befuddled agnostics and confirmed atheists, I strive to communicate in a way that reports, educates, and contributes to understanding differences and their core reasons.
Knowing how belief systems directly affect one's worldview and behavior is helpful as you may lead, manage, or interact with people. Are Catholics more hopeful because a scapular guarantees salvation? Are Protestants more negative because of a focus on our inherently sinful nature? Remember that I am not a theologian, so feel free to challenge whatever you disagree with or want to provide correction. I'm a teacher, not a preacher. On all matters, I take a Socratic approach, always searching for higher-quality questions, as in AI prompt engineering.
The Historical Roots of Anti-Catholicism
Episcopalian Author Philip Jenkins' book The New Anti-Catholicism - The Last Acceptable Prejudice details the origins of anti-Catholicism. It provides reasons why this form of ethnocentric hatred is embraced by the same people who disdain gender or racial hatred.
With the devolution of polite, civilized behavior, as evidenced by the steady flow of verbal poison and a plethora of online attack messages, I've come to realize and accept that with an ever-growing number of special interest groups, everybody can find an issue that upsets them, or someone to blame or someone to hate.
As regards Christianity, the early Church was originally Catholic but has now split into four major players on a competitive frontline: the 'one, true, apostolic' Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, Protestantism, and Oriental Orthodoxy, with over 200 major denominations on the Christianity org chart. As Christian groups form and dissolve constantly, there are, at any one time, an estimated 45,000 different Christian sects, all with varying belief systems.
It is no wonder that so many people, independent of their religion, are confused and easily misled by fraudsters. In this age of multiple Christian paths available on the cultural menu of faiths, absolute moralism essentially keeps them isolated from each other as victims of their own confirmation bias. Usually, we subscribe to research information with which we agree, so it's no wonder both Catholics and Protestants unless they are theological historians or take a personal interest in studying, usually do not study or understand each other's beliefs. At least, this is an observation from my informal survey. Thankfully, refreshingly open ecumenical discussion platforms exist.

We are advised to keep an open mind and avoid stereotyping. Yet, many bad jokes are made about pedophile priests. Would it then be improper to suggest that rabbis are greedy and imams are terrorists? If accusations of pedophilia were leveled against other groups, would it not be considered bigotry? In this case, instead of dealing with the criminals as individuals, the free license is assumed to condemn and abuse the entire institution or any individual Catholic-schooled person, whether they are practicing or not. If we were to extend this prejudicial error and decide to fire all politicians who've ever lied, perhaps we'd have no government. Should we terminate the government because of the obvious character flaws of some bad apples?

The Supreme Court is packed with Catholics, which disturbs some people who fear that deeply held beliefs may conflict with the law. On May 8, 2017, at a congressional U.S. District Court hearing for Trump nominee Amy Coney Barrett, Diane Feinstein insisted that a person can be "too religious." The fear was (and is) that courts may have too many Catholics. Would they also fear having too many blacks, Muslims, or Jews in elite organizations…or would such a sentiment be viewed as bigotry? Self-justified prejudice is so commonplace that it is considered truth.
Rev. Billy Graham and JFK
Although a Democrat, Rev. Billy Graham opposed JFK's nomination. Graham was a lifelong registered member of the Democratic Party. In 1960, he opposed John F. Kennedy's candidacy, fearing that Kennedy, as a Catholic, would be bound to follow the Pope. Graham worked secretly to encourage influential Protestant ministers to speak out against Kennedy.
In a 1960 meeting with Texas clergy, John F. Kennedy thoroughly clarified the separation of his obligation as a political leader who vowed to uphold the Constitution above all other laws and his role as a faithful Catholic, in this case, a Catholic who did not agree with every Vatican decree.

John Fitzgerald Kennedy
With the devolution of polite, civilized behavior, as evidenced by the steady flow of verbal poison and a plethora of online attack messages, I've come to realize and accept that with an ever-growing number of special interest groups, everybody can find an issue that upsets them, or someone to blame or someone to hate.

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
In June 2023, the Los Angeles Dodgers invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to their Pride Night event in June 2023 to honor their charitable work. The Dodgers' Sisters of Open Indulgence openly mocked Catholicism with events like 'Sexy Jesus' or 'Sexy Mary' contests. Given the double standard, let's do a 'Sexy Mohammed' contest unless there's an objection. After facing backlash from some Catholic groups, the Dodgers withdrew the contest invitation. Because of public outcry and criticism, the Dodgers reinstated the invitation and honored the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence at their Pride Night event.

Protestantism versus Catholicism
In 1517, Martin Luther's complaints about the corruption of the practice of indulgences in #70 and #71 of his 95 theses led to a reinterpretation of Scripture and questioning of everything, even the original teachings of the church fathers who followed instructions of the apostles. The Eleven apostles created the Didache, doctrinal teachings, Christianity's first catechism. Written in 85 AD, it provides guidelines for recognizing true and false apostles. The apostle Paul sarcastically referred to these false ones as 'super-apostles.' The Didache explains why women cannot be ordained, tells how to detect new prophets, deals with how to celebrate the seven sacraments, and bans the killing of unborn lives.
The Didache – the Historical Christian Catechism

Didache Manuscript
The Didache, also known as the doctrine of the apostles, is a short treatise that some of the Fathers accounted as next to Holy Scripture. Most sources refer to 'twelve apostles,' but some reference 'eleven apostles.' It was rediscovered in 1883 by Bryennios, Greek Orthodox metropolitan of Nicomedia, in the codex from which 1875 he had published the full text of the Epistles of St. Clement. The title in the MS. is Didache kuriou dia ton dodeka apostolon ethnesis, but before this, it gives the heading Didache ton dodeka apostolon. The old Latin translation of CC. I-V, founded by Dr. J. Schlecht in 1900, has a longer title, omitting "twelve", and has a rubric De doctrind Apostolorum.
For convenience, the first part's contents may be divided into three parts: the "Two Ways," the Way of Life, and the Way of Death; the second part is a rituale dealing with baptism, fasting, and Holy Communion; the third speaks of the ministry. Doctrinal teaching is presupposed, and none is imparted. The Didache constitutes the foundation of the magisterium, the source of the teaching authority Christ gave to the church. Concerning many controversial issues, there is a push for the church to adapt to societal realities; thus, modernism now clashes with the traditional decrees of Jesus Christ and His apostles.
Eucharist: Ch. IX runs thus: "Concerning the Eucharist, thus shall you give thanks: We give Thee thanks, our Father, for the holy Vine of David Thy Child, which Thou hast made known to us through Jesus Thy Child; to Thee be the glory forever.' And of the broken Bread: We give Thee thanks, our Father, for the Life and knowledge which Thou hast made known to us through Jesus Thy Child; to Thee be glory forever. For as this broken Bread was dispersed over the mountains, and being collected became one, so may Thy Church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into Thy kingdom, for Thine is the glory and the power through Jesus Christ forever.' And let none eat or drink of your Eucharist but those who have been baptized in the Name of Christ; for of this the Lord said: `Give not the holy Thing to the dogs.'" These are clearly prayers after the Consecration and before Communion.
Sola Scriptura
Martin declared himself the authentic interpreter of the Bible. He invented the concept of Sola Scriptura to break away from the Vatican. The concept claims that the source of all church doctrine is revealed exclusively via the Bible. Ironically, there is absolutely no reference in the Bible regarding the doctrine of Sola Scriptura. His broken vow created Protestantism, an open season on everything from the sacraments, saints, priesthood, apostolic succession, etc. While he admitted that the Catholic Church could be wrong, he did not hold himself to the same standard. Sola Scriptura allowed for individualism, creating numerous spinoff churches and sects.

U.S. Colonial Anti-Catholicism in the 17th and 18th Centuries

Anti-Catholic Discrimination Examples
Rhode Island
In 1719, Rhode Island barred Roman Catholics from holding political office in all the colonies. Rhode Island was known for its tolerance of religious minorities and was nicknamed 'Rogues' Island.' However, many early 18th-century restrictions on Catholics responded to the Jacobite uprising in England in 1745.
Connecticut
Connecticut did not elect Catholics to office at that time. The vast majority of the population remained distinctively English and of Puritan origin. Congregationalism was the established religion supported by public taxation.
Massachusetts
Near the close of Charles I's reign (d. 1649), the Irish forced emigration brought many to Massachusetts. When English religious dissenters first settled in Massachusetts, Quakers, Jews, and Catholics were not permitted in the colony. Catholics avoided Massachusetts during the colonial period after laws passed in 1647 and 1700 forbade Catholic priests to reside in the colony under pain of imprisonment and execution.
Catholic Prohibitions
1647 ban on Catholic priests: The Massachusetts Bay Colony passed a law that prohibited Catholic priests from living in the colony, with the penalty of banishment or execution for repeat offenses. The Puritans who settled the colony feared Catholics, believing them to be idolatrous blasphemers destined for damnation.
Catholics not permitted in the colony: Quakers, Jews, and Catholics were not allowed in the colony when English religious dissenters first settled it.
Catholics not allowed to vote: Only three of the 13 colonies allowed Catholics to vote.
Catholics not allowed to hold office: Most New England colonies and the Carolinas prohibited Catholics from holding office.
Catholic schools banned: Catholic schools were banned in all colonies except Pennsylvania.

However, anti-Catholic sentiment in Massachusetts simmered down during the American Revolution. In 1780, a Massachusetts Constitution amendment allowed Catholics to practice their religion. However, it wasn't until 1788 that the first public mass was celebrated. Today, Massachusetts is one of the country's most Catholic states, home to the Kennedy family.
By the mid-19th century, the Industrial Revolution had drawn hundreds of thousands of workers from the countryside to the cities to compete for jobs. Increased welfare spending and crime were blamed on Catholics. From 1845 to 1852, over two million Irish immigrants surged because of the devastating Irish potato famine. Migrants flooded into Boston, New York, and Baltimore. Colonies instituted laws demanding two years of residency for immigrants to apply for citizenship. Catholics formed labor unions to protect themselves from violence and discrimination. That initiative, in turn, turned up the heat with the nativists who were blinded to the unintended consequences of their self-righteousness. Did they overlook that the law applied to all immigrants, not just Catholics?
Hostility Fueled Anti-Catholic Conspiracy Theories

Maria Monk Hoax
By the 1920s, the 1836 book Awful Disclosures of Maria Monk – the Hidden Secrets of a Nun Living in a Convent Exposed had sold over 300,000 copies. Maria had spent seven years in an asylum for wayward girls and gave birth to a child out of wedlock. Supposedly, her licentious Montreal priests entered the convent through a subterranean tunnel to consort with horny nuns. Allegedly, if a baby was born, it was baptized, then promptly killed. Scholars consider her book an anti-Catholic hoax as inquiries reveal that she was never in the convent referenced. Increasing public awareness of this fact resulted in her losing her following. Her sensational book, which appealed to the public's prurient interests, contains graphic and disturbing scenes similar to those portrayed in the brutal and pornographic anti-Catholic stories authored by Marquis de Sade. He presented the argument that God controlled us via conscience so we could be truly free by violating conscience in the extreme by practicing the most selfish and reprehensible behavior, his eclectic anti-God, worship Satan philosophy. This viewpoint was later adopted by 'the world's most wicked man,' Aleister Crowley, who invoked demons.

The No-Nothing Party
Irish, German, and Italian immigrants comprised the No-Nothing party – The American Party, known as the Native American Party before 1855 and colloquially referred to as the Know-Nothings, or the Know Nothing Party, was a xenophobic nativist political movement in the United States in the 1850s. One million members were required to say, "I know nothing," whenever outsiders asked about its specifics, providing the group with its colloquial name.
Supporters of the Know Nothing movement believed that an alleged 'Romanist' conspiracy to subvert civil and religious liberty in the United States was being hatched by Catholics. They sought to politically organize native-born Protestants to defend their traditional religious and political values based on their pre-assumptions about the Catholic Church.
Their primary tools for creating nativist social change were violence, intimidation, and dominating positions in public office. On August 6, 1855 – Bloody Monday – Armed mobs dominated Louisville, Kentucky. There were two parties: The Democratic Party and the No-Nothing Party, previously the Whig Party. Rumors spread that elections were suspected of being fixed. No-Nothings ran the polling places. Conditions were bad, with fights breaking out.
On the night of August 5th, a Protestant mob rioted, attacking Catholics and burning down a brewery, but not until after consuming barrels of beverages. No-Nothings beat and killed residents and set fires to blocks of commercial and residential buildings. The next day, elections strongly favored the No-Nothings.
No-Nothings became the American party and later the Republican party. After their candidate, Levy Boone was elected mayor of Chicago, he banned immigrants from the city government and the police force.

The 1961 Supreme Court case Torcaso v. Watkins ruled that requiring a person to declare belief in God as a condition for holding public office violated the First and Fourteenth Amendments. This ruling reaffirmed that the government cannot impose religious tests or qualifications on its citizens.
By the 1860s, the No Nothing party was torn apart because of the issue of slavery. In current inauguration proclamations, 'so help me God' is retained as part of tradition.

Ku Klux Klan versus Papists
Before attacking negroes, the Ku Klux Klan wanted to protect American Protestants from Catholic' papists.' The Klan who murdered priests were terrorists. The Klan was instrumental in the defeat of the first Catholic presidential candidate, Al Smith, sparking fears of more anti-Catholic activities.
Oregon's Move to Close Parochial Schools
Mandatory Public School attendance, instituted by the Oregon Compulsory Education Act of 1922, would close parochial schools. The law legally required children between the ages of eight and sixteen to attend public school. It was set to go into effect in 1926, but the Supreme Court struck it down in 1925 as unconstitutional and prejudicial because of the existence of parochial schools.
The law was sponsored by the Ku Klux Klan and the Oregon Masons, who represented it as papist prevention. Catholics saw the bill as an attack. Historians generally regard this specific law as an example of nativism and anti-Catholic bigotry that would assimilate Catholic immigrants by 'Americanizing' their youth into the predominant national religion, early seeds of the U.S. Christian Nationalism movement.
Compulsory education laws are in every State to create an educated workforce. Despite that, there are examples of accidentally successful capitalist idiots who happened to be in the right place at the right time, and were riding the right trend wave. These education laws typically hold parents or guardians responsible for a child's school attendance and may prosecute parents for noncompliance. In the context of compulsory education laws, what exactly is meant by 'educated?' I've known of some 'educated people' who seem totally devoid of conscience or empathy, judging by their behavior. Perhaps you know of Christian hypocrites who preach about unconditional love but, in real life, spurn and hate others. Saint Augustine said, "True education motivates intelligent action."
Supreme Court Ruling
The 1925 Pierce v Society of Sisters Supreme Court ruling said parents, not government, decide a child's education. In the Society of Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary case, the U.S. Supreme Court, on June 1, 1925, ruled (9–0) that an Oregon law requiring children to attend public schools was unconstitutional. Supreme Court revoked the State law. The child is not a mere creature of the State. States can inspect all schools.

Al Smith
Al Smith - First U.S. Catholic Presidential Candidate
In 1928, Al Smith lost to Hoover because of his Catholic faith. He did not support alcohol prohibition and was thus labeled a papist. Smith's candidacy faced opposition from the Ku Klux Klan, which then numbered over one million haters.
In August 1925, a march was held in Washington, D.C., where thousands of hooded Klansmen aimed to display both their power and their opposition to new forces in the Democratic Party. In an implied reference to Smith, imperial wizard Hiram Wesley Evans declared that the Klan was opposed to the granting of "political power to any Roman Catholic." Anti-Smith forces attempted to deny him the presidential nomination by highlighting that he was an anti-prohibition Catholic, the key plank of his platform. Protestants condemned alcohol as sinful. This issue of alcohol drew a line between Catholics and reformers.
Augustinian Monk Martin Luther and Beer
Martin Luther's relationship with alcohol was reflective of the cultural context of his era. In 16th-century Germany, beer was a staple of daily life, often consumed instead of water due to water quality concerns. Like Benjamin Franklin, Luther acknowledged beer's role in society and even relished it, famously stating, "Whoever drinks beer, he is quick to sleep. Whoever sleeps long, does not sin. Whoever does not sin, enters heaven!" This mirthful comment shows his acceptance of moderate drinking as part of a balanced life.
Jack Shick Anti-Catholic Hoaxes
In 1981, conspiracy theorist Jack Shick published in the Protestant magazine Christianity Today claimed that he had inside knowledge through a renegade Jesuit, Alberto Rivera, that the Vatican had been involved in Communism, war, and other crazy things such as Jesuits sending pretty young girls to seduce Protestant clergy.

Shick claimed that the Vatican had a supercomputer that stores the name of every Protestant. How silly. How would you collect all that data? Often, many children raised as Protestants or Catholics might not relate to their church as adults. Concerning Shick's ethos, as with modern politics, honesty is optional.

Secular Forces- Moral issues
In 1989, at St. Patrick's Church Cathedral in New York City, 100+ people protested a moral issue that The Church's opposition to homosexuality, contraception, and abortion was interpreted as a threat to their lives.
Stereotyping
In the '80s & '90s, more intense Catholic hatred was portrayed in the media. Nuns were stupid servants, and priests were pedophiles. Movies were allowed great liberty in slamming the Vatican. Regarding the sexual abuse scandals in the 1990s, attacks were not directed toward individual criminals, as one might normally expect with any other organization or institution, but in this case, the entire institution is condemned. Why attack the church? There is a basic connection between hating the perpetrators and others who, by association, must be stupid or equally evil.
Anti-Christian Violence
Between 2018 and 2020, anti-Catholic hate crimes rose by 50%. There has been an epidemic of vandalism and arson attacks. As recently as May 9, 2021, in the Tacony section of the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, the St. Leo Church was torched by Catholic haters.
Public Acceptance of Catholic Politicians
Gallup surveys report that in 1958, about 2/3 of voters would accept a Catholic nominee. In 2024, over 94% would be okay with a Catholic politician, given they were a 'right Catholic.'
The Double-Standard of Discrimination
If one group is mistreated, all groups are at risk. It's not good for society. Injustice anywhere supports injustice everywhere. Current attacks on Jewish synagogues illustrate that those who hate Netanyahu tend to extend their hatred to all Jews, including those who do not support the Gaza conflict and who may object to the invasive and disruptive Jewish settlements.

March 5th, 2023 - 'Multiplying of Eucharists' Miracle
St Thomas Church - Thomason, Connecticut
Transubstantiation and the Good News
Most Protestants and over two-thirds of Catholics believe the Eucharist miracle is merely symbolic. However, science has consistently proven over centuries that woven within the consecrated host is the physical presence of A/B blood, microscopically interwoven with the bread fibers, including traces of distressed heart tissue. Independent scientific testing organizations did not know the source of their examined sample or even what it was supposed to be. The results were and are always are the same blood type, consistent with the Shroud of Turin A/B blood type. If you would like more information, see links below.
With over 350,000 Catholic masses globally celebrated daily, many parishioners experience minor miracles such as rapid healing from burns and cancer cures. If you have doubts about miracles, talk to a priest, especially missionaries. In 1939, a major miracle involved Rhoda Wise, a lifelong Protestant who converted to Catholicism at age 51. Her faith delivered a medical miracle to her. She had stomach cancer and an open abdominal wound. Doctors said she would die, but she received a visitation from Jesus Christ, who gifted her with the stigmata experience. She was healed of multiple ailments.
Rhoda Wise Quote:
"At 2:45 AM on the 28th day of May, 1939, Our Blessed Lord appeared to me as I lay awake in bed at my home. The room which had been dark suddenly became bright, and when I turned around in bed to see the cause of it, I beheld Jesus sitting on a chair beside my bed. I distinctly saw the marks of His forehead where the thorns had pierced His brow. He was gloriously beautiful and was robed in a gold garment which reflected every color. My first thought was that my time had come and I said to Him; “Have you come for me?” His answer was, “No. Your time has not yet come.”
In 2017, Betsey Shoach’s husband Mark was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma cancer. Doctors said there was no hope. She visited Rhoda’s house at 2337 25th St. NE and Harrisburg Rd., Canton, Ohio 44705. She brought her husband's 'sweaty' shirt, which she draped on the chair Jesus sat in when He had visited Rhoda. To the great astonishment of the doctors, her husband, although not present, recovered. Her home continues to be a healing destination for many visitors. If you believe you need a miracle, consider visiting Rhoda's house in Canton, Ohio, or locations where healing waters exist.

Rhoda Wise receives the stigmata.
If You Are Hated…
…there are two different ways to respond or maybe find a balance between two attitudes:
If people get away with a misdemeanor, they may be emboldened to try a larger act of abuse. Critics of this point of view take the attitude that all this noise about anti-Catholicism is merely a tempest in a chalice. Don't be upset. It's only another hatred target. Forgive and forget, and better yet, educate.
The opposite response is complaining and whining nonstop in a victim mentality that sees persecution everywhere. This can contribute to outrage fatigue. 'Turn the other cheek' means to walk away, not to be available for another attack. Let go of your defensiveness and love your enemy.
